It is known that applying kohl keeps the eyes cool and clean, improve vision and strengthen the eyes. It has also been used for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases such as blepharitis, cataract, conjunctivitis etc. It is also said to ward off an ‘evil eye’.

Most commercially produced ‘kajal’ contain high levels of lead. Studies have revealed that ‘Kajal’ comprises of galena (PbS), minium (Pb3O4), amorphous carbon, magnetite (Fe3O4), and zincite (ZnO).[3] Prolonged application may cause excessive lead storage in the body, affecting the brain and bone marrow, causing convulsions and anemia.

Self made kohl is free from all the above mentioned things. Especially during festive season we put diya all around, lets make kohl out of it. A kohl balances the ph of the eye making it alkaline and removing any type of allergies.

You will not believe how astonishingly easy it is to DIY a Kajal.

How to make your own Alkaline Kohl (Kajal)?

Ingredients-

Cold Pressed Mustard oil/ Sesame Oil (30ml)

Cold pressed Coconut Oil (5ml)

2 Cardamom, 2 Kesar threads, 1/8 pice of Camphor, 4 Cloves

Steps to make the kohl-

Take a Mortar and Pestle (Hamam Dasta), Add 2 cardamom with the peel, 2 kesar threads, 1 very small piece of camphor, 4 cloves. Beat it in the mortar and pestle into a fine powder. If you do not have a mortar pestle you can use the small mixer pot.

Take 1 cup of cold pressed mustard/sesame oil and add the above mixer. Mix it really well to form a solution.

Now take the Akhand diya and make sure its clean and tidy, add the cotton wick and pour the herbs enriched 30 ml cold pressed mustard/sesame oil.

You can light the Akhand diya and make sure to cover it with the lid. After few hours a smooth charcoal mixture will pile up on the top of the cover. Easy remove the cover into a small container. Keep collecting the dry powder until the light finishes. 

Later take a small wooden spoon and add 5ml coconut oil into it to make the black liquid kohl. Transfer it into a small container and refrigerate. You alkaline kohl is now ready to be applied into your eyes. Do not use your fingers. Use an ear bud or an old kohl applier if you have.

Herbal kajal is not only a cosmetic but also has many health benefits. It is said to have antimicrobial properties and can protect the eyes from infections. It is also believed to improve vision and protect the eyes from the harmful effects of pollution.
